The stage lights fall, the crowd goes quiet, and four harmonious voices rise up and fill the air. The melodies unfurl into something both familiar and fresh. What comes next may be a classic song by Joni Mitchell or Louis Prima. It may be an old bebop standard or cheeky arrangement of a 1980s hit. But these are arrangements like you鈥檝e never heard them before鈥攃ontaining all the richness of a full band, but performed using just four voices.
This is Cadence, Canada鈥檚 premiere vocal group. Based in Toronto, this a cappella ensemble has been wowing audiences across the country and around the world for nearly 15 years. Whether performing at sold-out jazz clubs and concert halls, at music festivals, for educational outreach, or for corporate functions, the members of Cadence bring an infectious energy and uncanny verve to every song they sing.
The group鈥檚 four critically acclaimed studio albums, Cool Yule (2011), Speak Easy (2010), Twenty for One (2005), and Frost Free (2000) have won or been nominated for numerous awards, including three nods from the JUNO Awards and 10 from CARA, the Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards.
The band is made up of Carl Berger (baritone and bass), Ross Lynde (tenor), Lucas Marchand (tenor), and Kurt Sampson (bass and vocal percussion). They each bring many years of training and performance experience to create a rich musical event appropriate for all ages.
鈥淲e're excited to be able to bring an internationally touring group of this caliber to our hometown,鈥 said Gladstone Community Center Board member Verna Otto. 鈥淚 first saw this group perform at a 水果视频 Arts Network Showcase and I'll have to say, they presented the most amazing harmonies I think I have ever heard. It'll be a great evening of entertainment and a good way to support our local community centre. I know I'm looking forward to it.鈥
Cadence is set to perform at the Gladstone and District Community Centre on March 27, showtime is 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available from local businesses or at the door on the day of the event. For more information visit:
