Rivers Splash Park illustration unveiled

By Barb Plewes

A group of residents has seen the need for summer fun for our youth and therefore have formed a committee to work with Atlantis Pools and Spas of Brandon. The group is headed by Barb Plewes (president), Jen Brown (vice-president), Leanne Miskulin (secretary) and Betty MacDonald (treasurer).

Riverdale Splash Park will involve the laying of a 2,000 square-foot cement pad with added water fixtures, and will feature a railroad theme. A building which will serve as combined wash/change rooms will also store equipment required for the park. The park will require hydro and water, which will be recycled for all future use by means of an activation button â€” an additional feature to prevent water waste when not in use. A holding tank will be filled once for the season, but due to evaporation, will be topped up occasionally. The approximate cost of this park is $280,000. The committee has been fundraising for this project; a recent raffle with cash prizes raised $1,180 and ladies night raised $430. Please consider supporting the following upcoming fundraisers.

Rivers and Area Lions Club will host a barbecue during the town-wide yard sale in Rivers on Saturday, June 13. All proceeds from the 11 a.m.-1 p.m. barbecue held on the parking lot of Westoba Credit Union in Rivers, will be given to Riverdale Splash Park.

Our huge fundraiser will be a dance/auction on Saturday, July 18 at Riverdale Community Centre; we are also planning an afternoon full of children’s events that day, so stay tuned for details! To make this date a success, we are in need of volunteers as well as donations (big or small) for a penny raffle, silent auction and live auction (if there are enough big items). Please find it in your heart to donate a small $10 item, which you can leave at Shelly Mom’s Kitchen. There have already been donations of $25-$100 gift cards, a stone fire pit, a computer, a horse, a signed jersey from Damon Severson of New Jersey Devils and more. Scott Kasprick is working to design a web page to help advertise the list of items available at the auction. Tickets for this event will soon be available around town for purchasing.

We have received a $1,000 donation from Westoba Credit Union; donations of any size will be accepted at any time and tax receipts will be issued. If you think your organization would consider supporting us but you need a letter to submit, please contact us because we have such a letter all ready! You can email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or mail Box 936, Rivers, MB  R0K 1X0. Donations can also be mailed to Box 936 and if you would like to purchase a specific piece of equipment, we are more than willing to let you engrave it for posterity. There are also plans to have a donor wall near the park so all will be able to see who supported this venture. Families will soon be packing up their children to other communities so they can play in a splash park; while they are there, they no doubt buy groceries and eat at a restaurant. Having a local park will not only keep those revenues in our community but also draw people to live in this wonderful area we call home.
