Fun and games!

By Lonnie Dyer

Rivers United Church was a hub of activity on Sunday, Sept.13 when 19 children, accompanied by parents and grandparents, attended the first Sunday school class of the new church year. Upcoming Sunday school dates are Oct. 11, Nov. 8 and Dec. 13. Leaders Shelley Foster and Becky Stewart have chosen another very upbeat and entertaining Christmas presentation this year; children will be be preparing for this in October and November.

Sundae Sunday was a huge hit as young and old alike enjoyed a variety of ice cream and a multitude of fixings. We will definitely be holding this event again!

Music continues to be a very important part of our worship services. To the absolute delight of our congregation, world class musicians Hugh Russell and Craig Terry recently shared their musical talents with us. We look forward to seeing them again at Christmas! We are happy to have Janice Brand (nee Hyndman) singing with the choir while she is in Rivers visiting her mother, Ina. Janice will be treating us with a vocal solo on Oct. 4 and joining the choir for a special Thanksgiving anthem on Oct. 11.  In preparation for their anthem on Oct. 25, the men’s choir has begun rehearsals after Sunday worship.

Our recent thrift sale proved very successful. Many thanks to Lynn Madden and her crew for their hard work in setting up, running the sale and packing up. Several boxes of warm winter clothing and blankets will be taken to Samaritan House in Brandon to help the less fortunate this winter. We were overwhelmed with the response to our first big pie sale; more than 80 beautifully baked pies of various flavours were delivered to the church and sold in short order!

Rev. Glenna Beauchamp will be blessing our pets at 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 4. One of our congregational families owns a 22-year-old cat who has been blessed many times over the years — it seems to be working!

Other exciting news for Rivers United Church is that our fall supper has been changed to an Italian dinner. This fun, family-friendly and accessible event will be held Oct. 18. Advance tickets are recommended and can be purchased by calling Hall or Barb Sveistrup, Karen Davies, Lori Kiesman or myself. More information will follow. For further details, please watch for posters around town or our ad in Rivers Banner.

Teams and individuals are beginning to register for our trivia night on Nov. 20. Please contact me at 204-328-7260 to register. Study up! Bragging rights and trophies are on the line!
