Plans for a new clinic in Minnedosa took a huge step forward this week with the announcement that a project manager has been selected for the upcoming construction. With the looming challenge to attract and retain medical practitioners in rural communities, Minnedosa sought advice from Prairie Mountain Health about its best course of action. The health authority identified that the best measure that could be taken is in the development of a modern primary care centre which is equipped with electronic record keeping as well as other conveniences that are becoming standard for doctors across the province.

Over the past year, working in consultation with a designer formerly of the health authority, the plans for a 4,800 square foot facility have been completed. Minnedosa Primary Care Centre will be situated on land directly west of the community鈥檚 existing hospital. Projected to meet the needs of five doctors, the centre is equipped with 10 treatment rooms, a procedure room as well as some office space which has been spoken for by the health authority.

In addition to the clinic space itself, the building will include the added amenity of an on-site suite to accommodate visiting and student doctors who are assigned to the community.

At the present time, the committee is confirming the financial support from five participating municipalities whose residents will benefit from the services provided, with hopes that strong support at the council level will cover a handsome portion of the capital costs; a public fundraising effort will be launched in the coming weeks. The project got off to a great start with a $50,000 commitment from Minnedosa Community Foundation over the next three years, which was announced at their annual luncheon. It is hoped that strong public support in partnership with our municipal governments will allow the project to break ground as early as this summer.
