Riverdale recreation report

By Navi Gill

Recreation manager

In 2015 Riverdale Recreation Commission successfully offered a variety of programs within the community for the advancement of recreation, culture and healthy living. Some  programs from last year include a 15-week after-school indoor soccer program at Rivers Elementary, a hunters’ safety course at Riverdale Community Centre (RCC), spring and fall yoga at Rivers  United Church, St. John’s Ambulance babysitting course at RCC,Terry Fox Run, Red Cross swimming lessons, drop-in youth floor ball and Rivers senior men’s hockey tournament at RCC.

The commission is especially dedicated in providing children and youth opportunities to participate in some of these programs to help fulfill the needs required for fundamental growth. Forty-eight children registered and participated in the soccer program, 17 youth became certified babysitters, and 28 local children advanced in swimming levels. Additionally, more than 60 children participated in our summer day camps held at RCC. The seven-week program had an average of 20-25 kids per day and introduced fun and educational field trips every Friday to various sites in the Westman region.

This year Rivers Karate Club was re-introduced with local black belt and head instructor Adam Thompson at RCC for a 21-week program (January to May) including 15 youth and three adults. With the level of interest karate has garnered, the possibility of program continuity may extend annually and include two sessions, one each in spring and fall.

Currently Riverdale Recreation Commission is offering a free drop-in indoor volleyball program at Rivers Collegiate. This is every Friday until June 3, 7-8:30 p.m. and is open to Rivers Collegiate students and all members of the community. Drop-in youth floor ball is expected to start at RCC every Tuesday and Thursday 3:30-4:30 p.m. from May 3-June 30. Summer day camps will run from July 4-29 (four weeks) with a one-week break for the annual Laxdal Hockey Camp, which runs  Aug. 1-5. Day camps will resume Aug. 8-Sept. 2 (another four weeks) and will once again include field trips every Friday. Registration forms for summer day camps will be available online on May 2 at www.riversrink.ca.
