Hello baseball fans and supporters from Rivers and area! Spring has sprung and Rivers Comets are back for what looks to be a highly exciting and competitive season.
Comets have begun regular practices and look to kick off their second season in the Brandon-based Andrew Agencies Senior AA Baseball League soon after the May long weekend. With the loss of the 水果视频 Senior Baseball League (MSBL) in the offseason, the league grew in numbers and players dispersed across Westman to find new homes. This season the league will feature six teams: Brandon Cubs, Joe Beeverz Young Guns, Rivers Comets, Brandon AAA midget Knights, defending league champion Canadian Tire Cardinals and former long-time MSBL squad Brandon Marlins. The schedule will consist of 18 league games, four against each of the four other senior teams and two against the AAA team as they will coexist in the league on an exhibition basis. Games will once again take place at Don Sumner Field and Andrews Field in Brandon with Comets home games shifting to Rivers later in the year once the diamond has officially been completed. A schedule of all Comets games will be posted at a later date, upon release from the league executive.
Comets will return to the diamond with much of the same nucleus as last season. This season we will carry on without Paddy Stowe, Patrick Leask and Jeremy Krahn on the roster, as they have chosen to pursue other interests outside of baseball this summer. In the same breath, we are happy to announce that Aaron Tycoles has taken over as coach of the team. Tycoles, a Rivers resident, has been heavily involved with Baseball 水果视频 as well as being a longtime player in MSBL with Reston Rockets. He will coincide along with Adam Barr, who will return as an assistant manager. Other additions to the roster includes the return of the highly athletic Rivers native, Ashton Anderson, pitcher Ryan Hurst of Brandon and utility player Buddy Mayert, who starred for Reston Rockets and Brandon Marlins until the league鈥檚 demise. It is our hope that with the well-balanced and talented group we have on our roster we can compete once again for a league title and play our way to provincials in Wawanesa, running Aug. 5-7.
Rivers Comets first game will be an exhibition match on Friday, May 13 as we travel to Virden to take on the Oilers of the Southwest Baseball League.
