Students learn about entrepreneurship

Students are often taught that success means 鈥済etting a good job鈥� after graduation. Many are not aware that launching a business is a viable career option that can bring them amazing opportunities.
However, starting a business is not a career option that most children are encouraged to consider.
In Junior Achievement鈥檚 Our Business World program, elementary students explore how businesses are created and what makes them thrive. Using games and multimedia, students learn about innovation, start-ups and self-employment.
Volunteers from local businesses provide students with a first-hand look at how business supports the community. During this interactive, in-class program, students will:
鈥� Learn why businesses are created and how they change
鈥� Explore where customers come from and how to keep them
鈥� Discuss how business contributes to the well-being of a community
鈥� Recognize that businesses can impact the environment in both positive and negative ways
鈥� Learn about the history of some Canadian businesses and how they鈥檝e changed over time
鈥� Understand the importance of innovation
鈥� Describe what makes an entrepreneur innovative
By the end of this program, students will see the power of the entrepreneurial spirit in Canada. This will inspire them to ask, 鈥淒o I have what it takes to become an entrepreneur?鈥�
On May 11 and 12 Tammy Wilson (of CIBC) and two of her staff spent two afternoons with members of the 6A class at NACI delivering Our Business World. The program aimed to inspire and prepare the students to succeed, by providing opportunities to learn about financial literacy, entrepreneurship and work readiness skills.
All Grade 6 students at NACI will have the opportunity to participate in this program.
