80 years ago Friday, June 23, 1936
Miss Florence Merriman brought honour to herself again in Winnipeg last week when she won the intermediate high jump in the Provincial Ladies Amateur Athletic Association鈥檚 events. She cleared the bar at five feet and three quarters of an inch, which is one and a half inches over the last Canadian record. Congratulations.
70 years ago Thursday, June 27, 1946
Mrs. G. M. Parrott, of Neepawa has been announced the winner of Lipton鈥檚 fifth limerick contest, bringing a prize of $100. Mrs. Parrott is the first winner from this district and the congratulations of this office, Lipton鈥檚 Tea and her many friends are extended.
The entry of the Lipton鈥檚 contest was the first contest entry that Mrs. Parrott had ever made and on being interviewed, stated that she was satisfied with her results. Larry Giles, grocery manager at Fenwick鈥檚, was awarded the $25 dealer prize and intends to divide it with the grocery clerks. The limerick for the fifth week was as follows:
There was once a lady named Kate, who with brisk taste in Lipton鈥檚 would date,
Other teas she would skip,
So with her take a tip.
Mrs. Parrott鈥檚 last line was: Serve Lipton鈥檚, it鈥檚 really first rate.

Miss Shirley Rutledge, RN recently graduated from the Winnipeg General Hospital. She is the daughter of Mrs. Rutledge and the late Herbert Rutledge of Neepawa and is presently on the nursing staff at the Winnipeg General Hospital.

Knox Presbyterian Church observed its 84th anniversary Sunday, June 19. Rev. F. X. Muttoo conducted the service and preached the sermon for the occasion. Special music was rendered by the choir under the direction of Mrs. M. Sparling, choir leader and organist.
Knox Presbyterian Church was open for public worship Oct. 28, 1882, by Rev. Dr. James Robertson, superintendent of missions. Rev. F. X. Muttoo, presently serving, is the 50th minister of the church. Pioneer families of the first congregation are represented today by members of the third and fourth generations.

The Neepawa-Minnedosa 4-H rally was held on June 12 at the Minnedosa schools. Over 300 members and 17 clubs took part in the rally sponsored by the Minnedosa Agricultural Society and the 水果视频 Department of Agriculture.
During the afternoon, the interviews for the Gold Watch took place. The top agricultural member was Lois Thompson of the Basswood multi-purpose club and the top home economics member was Tannis Benson of the Neepawa Buttons, Beaux and Bakers home economics club. The watches were donated by 水果视频 Pool Elevators and North American Lumber, Minnedosa.

Beautiful Plains School Division secretary-treasurer Bud Hanson says the difference in funding created by the present Government Support to Education (GSE) program translates into $1 million loss to the division.
鈥淲hat happens is you have anywhere from $300 to $600 difference per pupil [in school divisions] in funding, which in our case, we would get another $1 million from the province, which we wouldn鈥檛 have to levee here locally, if they [the province] would acknowledge the inequities there are with the present funding.鈥�
Hanson was a member of a delegation of Westman school division officials, which met in Brandon recently with education minister Jerry Story to outline the inequities existing in the present funding system.
鈥淟ow spending school divisions are being penalized, in that the present method of funding is directly tied to the amount of money that was spent in the previous year.鈥�

After 21 years in business, Neepawa Electronics will close its doors for the last time this week.
Bill Taylor, who started the business in 1975, said the Zenith Television, stereo and VCR dealership was no longer profitable 鈥� in part a victim of too much competition and tough economic times.
鈥淭hings are tight,鈥� said Taylor. 鈥淎fter we sell the last thing, it鈥檚 gone.鈥�

Beautiful Plains School Division approved salaries for non-teaching staff at the last board meeting.
The staff employment regulations policy provides for accumulated sick leave of 115 days and the same wording for family medical leave as negotiated with teachers. Sick leave provisions were amended to clarify worker鈥檚 compensation and auto accident insurance benefits.
The division and local teachers鈥� association have also ratified a new agreement.
