My perspective - Ready or not

Over the next decade, it鈥檚 estimated that about $1.5 trillion worth of business assets will change hands in Canada. The success or failure of this transfer will have a huge impact on Canada鈥檚 economy and I鈥檓 not convinced we鈥檝e done all we can to prepare.

Idon鈥檛 know if I have ever been so upset about a topic in all my years of writing a column. Canada, and especially western Canada, is getting a very raw deal. The federal government鈥檚 ill-planned treatment of our oil industry is scandalous.

My perspective - New funding, old problem

The newspaper industry is one in flux. While the various components that make up the industry are often lumped together, the reality isn鈥檛 nearly such a homogeneous group.  There are dailies and weeklies, rural and urban markets, chains and independents. The problems of one aren鈥檛 necessarily the problems of all.

Right in the centre - I am skeptical

The federal Liberal government has been studying newspapers for several years. A couple of years ago, I was invited to fly to Ottawa to testify before the parliamentary Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage. At that time, I made the case that we need reliable local newspapers to cover local news, sports and political issues. The whole fake news idea was gaining steam at that time and has since become a full-blown epidemic. There are now many 鈥渘ews鈥 outlets that spread falsehoods with pride and others that do it by way of sloppy reporting.
