With it being the month of October, winter sports are beginning to take over the sporting landscape in Westman. The ever popular curling season is here and long-time enthusiast of the sport, reporter/broadcaster and president of Curl水果视频 Resby Coutts had some interesting thoughts on what to expect in 2012-2013.

Coutts was a guest on 880 CKLQ's Monday Sports Talk and said Rob Fowler is primed for another solid season. The Brandon product defeated Mike McEwen in last year's provincial final in February and Coutts says the he could very well win the title again.

"Rob is one of three or four teams that have a legitimate shot to win," said Coutts. "Jeff Stoughton, of course, always has a legitimate shot to win.

"He'll (Fowler) say that repeating as 水果视频 champion is a very difficult thing to do," continued Coutts. "Realistically, that has to be front and centre in anyone's mind. It doesn't happens very often but it happens."

Coutts spoke with cautious optimism regarding McEwen, who has lost three straight provincial finals and believes his time as 水果视频 champion should come at some point.

"Mike McEwen is going to win sooner or later," he said. "There have been teams of that quality that never did win. So until you win, the question mark will always be there."

"In sport, emotional letdowns happen in a lot of different ways. You don't think it's going to happen. You try and guard against it. Did it happen? Who knows. Fowler played remarkably (against McEwen in last year's final). Maybe he learned from that. We thought he learned from the year before. It'll be interesting to observe."

Meanwhile, on the women's side, Coutts says to look out once again for five-time provincial champ Jennifer Jones, Cathy Overton-Clapham and Chelsea Carey.

"Chelsea Carey is the (female version of) Mike McEwen. People across the country expect her to be at the national scotties -- maybe it'll be this year," said Coutts.

The 2013 Scotties Tournament of Hearts women's provincial curling championship will take place in Stonewall Jan. 23-27 at the Veteran's Memorial Sports Complex. Meanwhile, the 2013 Safeway Championship men's provincial curling event will be held in Neepawa, Feb. 6-10 at the Yellowhead Centre.
