The Neepawa Press began in 1896. It鈥檚 been a tradition, a mainstay for Neepawa and area for 119 years. On Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2015, my wife Christine and I purchased the venerable Neepawa Press. We are pleased to be able to return the paper to being locally owned and operated.

I wish to apologize to both families for mistakes I made in last week鈥檚 column. I mentioned Robin Routledge鈥檚 wedding but neglected to say he married Lindsay Carmichael, a young woman from Prince George, B.C. I also said the wedding was in Alberta but it was actually in British Columbia, in Fort St. John, as I stated.

For the past five years a variety of people from the Rivers area have participated in a farmer鈥檚 market that has been held in the parking lot of Westoba Credit Union. All proceeds from these sales have been given to Acres of Hope, which is the local growing project for Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB). CFGB is a faith-based Canadian charity which is comprised of membership from 15 different denominations and organizations to help address the food needs of thousands of hungry people around the world. In a recent CFGB report they state that through their member agencies, 鈥淲e committed $41 million in funding to 125 projects in 39 countries that benefitted approximately 1.1 million people in this last year. While the prevalence of hunger in the world is declining, thanks to programs like CFGB, there are still almost 800 million people around the world who still remain chronically hungry. The Canadian government has generously supported CFGB through the years with their funding support of $4 for every $1 raised.

On Tuesday, Aug. 25, the sun shone on the grand opening of Erickson鈥檚 community garden. The raised bed garden plots are located adjacent to the Riding Mountain Biosphere Reserve (RMBR) office on 2nd Ave NE.
