Election changes due to amalgamation

By Diane Kuculym

      Senior Election Official

The province of 水果视频 passed legislation in 2012 forcing municipalities with populations of less than 1,000 to complete a plan to amalgamate by Dec. 2, 2013. RM of Blanshard, RM of Saskatchewan and Town of Rapid City have agreed to amalgamate to become RM of Oakview. Due to amalgamation, there will be many changes in the upcoming municipal election. The first council of Oakview will be composed of a head and six councillors. The head of council will be elected at large from the current municipalities of Blanshard, Saskatchewan and Rapid City (one reeve will be elected as opposed to two reeves and one mayor). Councillors of the new municipality are to be elected on the basis of two councillors elected at large from the following wards: Ward 1 is currently the Town of Rapid City, Ward 2 is currently the RM of Saskatchewan and Ward 3 is currently the RM of Blanshard.

Tournament to support itself

By Sheila Runions

After seven years of experience planning hockey tournaments in his former hometown of Cardale, Scott Peters of Rivers is switching seasons and co-ordinating a ball tournament in Rivers. The two-day affair will be held Sept. 19 and 20 on the UCT diamond and the old senior diamond, northeast of the easily recognizable UCT field. Scott admits he needs to clean that area before then but believes it to still be a playable space. But it is this lack of space that prompted the tournament.

10 Little Drivers

Reprinted from our files

Ten little drivers cruising down the line. One had a heavy foot and then there were nine.

Nine little drivers, the hour was getting late. One dozed a moment and then there were eight.

Eight little drivers and the evening seemed like heaven. One showed his driving 鈥渟kill鈥 and then there were seven.

Seven little drivers, their lives were full of kicks. One bought a bottle and then there were six.

Six little drivers impatient to arrive. One rushed a traffic light and then there were five.

Five little drivers wheeling near the shore. One viewed the scenery and then there were four.

Four little drivers, happy as could be. One passed upon a hill and then there were three.

Three little drivers were busy 鈥 it is true. One neglected car repairs and then there were two.

Two little drivers and day was nearly done. One didn鈥檛 dim his lights and then there was one.

Yes, one little driver who鈥檚 still alive today. By following the safety rules he hopes to stay that way.

Sing a joyful song!

By Lorrie Dyer

Rivers United Church is one of a very few remaining small rural churches that is fortunate to have a choir actively participate in regular church services. Dedicated choir leader Shirley Russell has directed the choir since Ina Hyndman retired from the position in 1984. In 2000 Dianne Kowalchuk became the choir鈥檚 accompanist, as well as the church organist.
