School is about to start (classes in Rivers resume on Sept. 3) and back to school safety steps should be followed. Motorists are advised to please observe the speed zone areas at Rivers Elementary and Rivers Collegiate and be mindful of laws relating to school buses. Should you be caught for exceeding the speed limit or passing a bus while unsafe to do so, you may be subject to a fine and two demerit points which will be added to your licence.
Beever pitches no-hitter

Loyal readers will be familiar with the name Scott Beever of Rivers, and his success on the baseball diamond as a player and pitcher. He has competed in five provincial championships, four Western Canadian championships, two national championships, a Western Canada senior championship and two Canada Cups. On Aug. 7 Scott pitched the opening game of the annual Western Canadian Junior AAA championships, this year hosted in Winnipeg. A teammate with Elmwood Giants since 2011, that first game which saw them clean the board with a 3-0 score, was truly a team effort.

Gaye Loree spent part of her summer travelling down memory lane while going through her mother’s storage chest. The late Eunice Gill (nee Joiner) saved two framed photographs which are causing Gaye to investigate the reason her mother kept them. Eunice left no information with the picture of two girls and Gaye has asked plenty of family and friends — to no avail.

As summer begins to slowly wind down, so does the program at Rivers Ë®¹ûÊÓƵ Youth Job Centre (MYJC). There are a number of people to recognize for their support throughout our successful season — the sponsoring committee (Town of Rivers) and the numerous employers, both businesses and homeowners, who placed job orders this summer. Your participation in the job referral service provides youth and students in our community the opportunity to gain work experience and an income!

This summer the board of Ë®¹ûÊÓƵ Hydro Forest Enhancement Program stopped in Rivers to take a look at the latest tree planting projects they have supported. The projects included trees planted in the school yards and around Riverdale Community Centre. The program is sponsored by Ë®¹ûÊÓƵ Hydro’s vice president of the Transmission Business Unit.
