On Wednesday, Feb. 27, MP Larry Maguire hosted a recognition ceremony at Brandon Legion No. 3. He was acting on behalf of Veterans Affairs minister Erin O鈥橳oole when he provided pins and certificates to Second World War veterans. Held to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Canada鈥檚 participation in the conflict, Ken Williamson of Rivers was one of the seven people honoured.
Fewer crimes in Rivers in February

Rivers Police Service has compiled its monthly statistics report and the three Criminal Code categories saw a total of seven cases, versus 11 recorded in January. Some of this may be due to fewer days in this shortest month of the year, but we like to believe it鈥檚 because citizens are more well behaved. Only one violent crime (assault) was lodged while we had three in January (two assault and one sexual offence). There were four property crimes, all at theft over $5,000; January had five thefts and one property damage. The 鈥渙ther crimes鈥� were consistent with January at two cases; both months they were for various other crimes such as breaches, public mischief, harassing phone calls, etc.
Carol's celebrates anniversary in unique way

In late 1996 Brandon鈥檚 Carol Hassard quit the banking industry and bought the former Skinner鈥檚 Shop on Main, and previously Rivers Gazette-Reporter office. Following renovations she opened Carol鈥檚 Time Again Treasures in February 1997. Four years ago she began closing for approximately six weeks after Christmas; this year, she closed for two months. But she didn鈥檛 take an extended holiday, she was packing and preparing to move into a new building.

For the past two months members of Strathclair Drama Club have been meeting once or twice a week to memorize lines and music, learn choreography and staging, and try on costumes. There are another two months of rehearsals ahead for the 42-member cast. A full 25 per cent of those actors are from within the coverage area of Rivers Banner.

Volunteers will be helping to file income tax returns again this year. Community Volunteer Income Tax Program is a free program for people with simple tax returns with income at or below a certain level: $30,000 for single people, $35,000 for couples and $35,000 for single parents with one child (add $2,500 for each additional child).
