Amnesty International is a non-governmental global movement focused on human rights and social justice for all. At present, its membership totals seven million people from more than 150 countries. Its motto is "Better to light a candle than to curse the darkness." Rivers United Church Outreach and Pastoral Care Committee will be hosting an Amnesty Lunch after worship on Sunday, March 16. A green theme of salads, soup, desserts and beverages will be offered with all proceeds forwarded to Amnesty International.

The stage lights fall, the crowd goes quiet, and four harmonious voices rise up and fill the air. The melodies unfurl into something both familiar and fresh. What comes next may be a classic song by Joni Mitchell or Louis Prima. It may be an old bebop standard or cheeky arrangement of a 1980s hit. But these are arrangements like you鈥檝e never heard them before鈥攃ontaining all the richness of a full band, but performed using just four voices.

UPDATE: Thursday, Mar. 19 - On March 14, 1,233 PC Party members cast their ballots to select the party鈥檚 candidate for the Agassiz riding in the next provincial election. Eileen Clarke, Darryl Gerrard, Sheri Grant and Kelly Wilson put their names forward to replace current MLA Stu Briese, who announced last year that he wouldn鈥檛 be running in the next provincial election. Once the votes were tallied, Clarke was announced as the winner.

The winter sport of curling is dominant in the March issue of The Rambler, Rivers Collegiate鈥檚 newsletter. The high school was host to five visiting entries in the Zone 7 bonspiel competing for a berth to go to curling provincials in The Pas. Brenda Gerrard coached the local girls rink; that championship was won by Carberry.
