The viability of industries and communities has come into sharp focus lately. The Port of Churchill was dealt the most recent in a series of death blows with the closure of the Omnitrax shipping port. The Churchill port has not been viable for a long time, perhaps never. To operate, it takes huge government subsidies and enforced usage by way of the former Canadian Wheat Board.

One of the lessons I learned early in life (then forgot and had to learn it again鈥攎any, many times) was that once something is said or done, those who said or did it have to live with the consequences of their actions. Apologies won鈥檛 undo the damage that has been done.

The last few weeks many eyes are glued to the television to see how our Canadian sport stars are doing at the Olympics. The thought always occurs to me, that if I practice my musical instruments the way these men and women practice to be worthy of the sport they enjoy doing, I could be a star performer.
